Saracen Chivalry explores the space between Arthurian romance and the ethics and spirituality of Sufism. Framed as a medieval treatise penned by a fabled African queen, the book articulates a vision of life centered on the virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and generosity, illustrating these virtues with scriptural verses, prophetic sayings, sage maxims, and traditional legends and lore.
Queen Belacane is dying. As a last act, she inscribes a book of counsels, or prince’s mirror, to guide her newborn son on his life’s path. The Queen’s counsels illuminate the way of futuwwa, a tradition of mystical chivalry traced to the Prophet Abraham. If the Prince would unite the chivalries of Christendom and Islam and attain the Cup Mixed with Camphor, he must fulfill the pillars of his faith, and uphold the universal virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and generosity.

a must-read for human fulfillment
By Wally Jasper
This book should be in every school's curriculum. The Gideons, or whoever, should place it in all hotel rooms, and it should be required reading for children, adults, soldiers, artists, scouts, athletes, doctors, lawyers, teachers, clergy, politicians, CEOs, public servants and the private sector. For this book contains the wisdom that has been passed on through the ages, through all traditions, on how humans are to live ethical, just and righteous lives devoted to the timeless imperative of creating beauty and harmony through our human persons.
When we hear the word "chivalry" we often imagine a bygone era of Don Quixote romantics. Codes of honor, attention to the manner in which we conduct our lives, self-discipline in service to our ideals: in this day and age all seem like relics that have no place in our modern aggressively competitive self-serving culture. Yet these are precisely what humans find sorely lacking in the world and in themselves. Saracen Chivalry sounds the exact right note for our time by touching the deepest parts of our being which hunger for greater authenticity and congruence between our daily lives and the calling of that still, silent presence that lives in our hearts. When this inner congruence and connection forms the basis from which each person meets other beings, the quality of the interactions reflects depth and shared presence. Through a renaissance of training in mystic chivalry (meaning not just adopting an outer form but developing the awareness underlying it), ultimately the whole web of inter-relatedness on the planet will shift toward one of mutual respect and honor. The predatory, exploitative culture based upon the unbridled and unmitigated quest for dominance by myriad ego-islands will fade into a vague memory of an infantile stage of human development.
The author's background is part of the story of his book. Pir Zia Inayat Khan hails from a grand lineage of Indian Sufis. His grandfather was the preeminent mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan who brought the wisdom of Sufism to the West in the early twentieth century. Rather than simply introduce Westerners to yet another "ism," Hazrat Inayat Khan recognized the urgent need for all the various nationalities, races, religions of the world to realize--and live according to--the reality that all beings, all life in its glorious multiplicity, are a kaleidoscopic expression of Oneness: one Life, one Consciousness, one Being; and that the narrow sectarianism of nations, races and creeds (not to mention the narrow "sectarianism" of single individuals) all opposing and vying against one another is the foremost source of suffering in the world. When humans awaken to the reality of the One Being, their personalities reflect that realization; they become naturally kind, considerate, noble, even majestic. Hazrat Inayat Khan calls this human flowering "the art of personality."
Saracen Chivalry carries this theme forward into the actual practice of embodying the realization of Oneness in the realm of our lived-out daily worlds. It addresses not so much what we do but how we do it, and who we are and are to become in the process. In Saracen Chivalry this message is expressed not only through its content but also through the exquisite quality of its form. Please don't imagine that Saracen Chivalry is a dry book of manners and conduct. Pir Zia's writing is beautiful and evocative, the narrative reminiscent of Queen Shaharazade's captivating and compelling tales. Written as the counsels of a dying Moorish Queen to her newborn son, the words weave a tapestry of lore and wisdom through the stories, scripture and modeling of sages and holy people of the Abrahamic traditions, as told through the Islamic perspective. As the Queen's guidance unfolds, we readers are carried into a world-view derived from the deepest insights of mystical realization. As this realization becomes fleshed out through the exemplars of the sages, we begin to glimpse an image of potential human beauty as it is expressed through a personality in tune with the Real. And we can begin to imagine how we ourselves can become the instruments of that beauty. This book is a work of genius and will most certainly change lives. Hopefully its influence will spread widely and contribute to the much needed evolution in human consciousness, values and behavior.

Character building based on Sufi teachings and Qur'an
By Noor-Malika
Pir Zia has beautifully created an amazing handbook for building character and ethics, one of the foundations for all the ways humanity comes to inner life.
This is an enjoyable slow-read for me as the offerings go deep and suggest contemplation of one's own life. I read, then "cook" until ready to go on to the next chapter.
Those familiar with the Qur'an, will recognize the many references; those familiar with the work of Hazrat Inayat-Khan (who taught about the unity of religious ideals),will also see his hand in the guidance given. Those who are unfamiliar with either can have an opportunity to discover the beauty and guidance to be found in each.

SARACEN CHIVALRY
By Dr. James H. Burton
"Having two adult sons and five grandsons, I recommend to them the principles of integrity and chivalry proclaimed in the book SARACEN CHIVALRY by Pir Zia Inayat Khan. These classical principles of truth, honor, consideration, and respect would serve all men well, irrespective of their culture or religious traditions." - James Harper Burton, Ph.D., author of HUMAN NATURE MEDITATIONS - CONCENTRATIONS FOR MANAGERS AND OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.[...]
